The best part about Slow Cooker Barbecue Ribs is that they great all year long! Not just during the typical summer grilling season.
Slow coking ribs breaks down the connective tissue on the back of the ribs. That in turn helps make the ribs fall apart and become really tender.
And...you can enjoy barbecue ribs any time of year. Which is exactly what we do.

Smithfield Baby Back Ribs
Smithfield® Ribs are extra-tender and juicy and are your secret weapon for making great ribs on the grill! There's no need to be afraid that the ribs are going to be tough or tasteless!
How do you Cook BBQ Ribs in a Crock Pot?
Growing up my mother used to first boil the ribs in a large pot of water on top of the stove. Then she would place them on our charcoal grill in the backyard of our house in Queens, NY.
I never enjoyed ribs the way my mother made them...sorry mom. They were tough, not tender.
A few years ago, I decided to try cooking them first in the slow cooker and then finishing them off on the grill. And they were amazing. The meat really did fall off the bone. My husband and son loved them.

🍶Storage Tips
- The best way to store leftover barbecue ribs is in an airtight container or freezer bag and refrigerate them as soon as possible.
- This will keep them fresh for four to five days.
❄️Freezing Tips
- You can also freeze any leftovers in an airtight container or freezer bag.
- They will be fresh for up to three months.
- Be sure to label the container or bag with the date so that you can keep track of how long they have been stored.
🔁 Thawing and Reheating Tips
- Remove the ribs from the freezer and allow them to defrost overnight in the refrigerator.
- When you are ready to reheat the ribs, you can do so in a preheated oven or on place them on the grill until they are heated through.
Baby back ribs come from the part of the ribs that are connected to the backbone. They're called "baby" ribs because they’re shorter than spare ribs which are cut from the ends of baby back ribs. Baby back ribs are more tender than spare ribs.

Hi. Grill these on low? Med? High? Thanks.
Lois says
Place the ribs on the grill at medium-high heat. Thank you for visiting. Hope you enjoy the recipe.
Pat says
They were yummy but a tad overcooked. I started the grill out at high to give it a good sear then turned it down to med. I think my grill runs hot so I will try medium high throughout next time and only cook them 8 minutes per side. Thank you!

You don’t mention removal of the membrane. Isn’t the membrane still attached to the Smithfield racks of ribs? Removing this is important to the tenderness. When and to what size (how may bones) do you cut the racks into? There’s no way you could stuff a single rack into a crock pot. Details like these are important to newbie rib cookers. Please help.
Lois says
For this recipe, I didn't remove the membrane. I talk about removing the membrane and how to do that in the following post: https://walkingonsunshinerecipes.com/oven-baked-barbecue-ribs/
I did cut the rack of ribs into 3 pieces to fit into my crock pot. There was about 12 ribs in the full rack. You can see they were cut when I add them to the barbecue grill.
I updated the post to include these steps that you suggested. Thank you for your input!
