As promised, I'm going to spend this week sharing the devotional I gave at our Mother/Daughter Tea in 2007. I spent most of Saturday going over it, changing it, fixing it, etc. Here is Day One...
Doing a devotional on the Proverbs 31 Woman can be terrifying! Let’s face it, we all have visions of this woman…she is a domestic goddess, a beauty queen, the perfect wife; submissive to her husband’s every whim, the “Martha Stewart” of the Bible.
How can this Proverbs 31 Woman be an example to us as wives today in the year 2009? Her example is a lot more relevant than we might at first expect. When we really begin to look further into this ancient biblical ideal of womanhood, we do not find a typical housewife occupied with dirty dishes and laundry, her days full with demands from her husband and children. More importantly, we don’t find an overly ambitious career woman who leaves her family to fend for itself either.
What we find is a strong, multi-talented, caring woman who is an individual in her own right. This woman has money to invest, servants to look after and even real estate to manage. She is her husband’s partner and she is completely trusted with the responsibility for their lands, property and goods. Her husband trusts her to run the household while he serves as a senator.
But with all her responsibilities, first and foremost, she looks to God. Her primary concern is God’s will in her life. She is a woman after God’s own heart. I read another devotional once that described the many characteristics that this Proverbs 31 Woman embodies as being “a pearl on the strand of our life.”
We’re not suddenly handed a full strand of pearls once we’re married. Some of us are only half strands, some are long strands, some are only short bracelets, but we all are a work in progress. And please understand, I’m not holding a full strand of pearls either…some days I’m barely holding one!
So let’s take a few days this week to really examine the characteristics of this remarkable woman verse by verse. Tomorrow’s pearls…VIRTUE, FAITHFULNESS and GOODNESS.
Don't forget the reason for this devotional...our Revolution!
