Happy Monday!

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Here at Walking on Sunshine it was beautiful!

The Colonel was home for 4 days and he sure got a lot done around here!

I don't know where my head was
NOT
taking before pictures of the
 project that he worked on.

Ever since we put the roof over our back deck, we have been neglecting our front porch.

The Colonel decided to remedy this and washed down the front porch
and re-stain the railings and the floor.

I also asked him to please paint the milk cans and bench we have out there a nice black.
I had originally painted them cranberry to match the shutters
when we moved here 6 years ago.

But I'm tired of that color and thought black would stand out nicely.
And it does!
They look so nice and sharp; we're going to paint the shutters black in the spring.

I say "we" but we all know who does
most of the work around here!

We could really use a few rocking chairs on the front porch a well.
But that purchase will have to wait.

We decided to replace the awful brass light fixtures that came with the house.
They were such bug collectors!!
I couldn't believe the amount of bugs inside these fixtures when they were taken down.

But we have really pretty black fixtures that are not enclosed,
so no more bugs...
 hopefully.

I promise to get some pictures posted in the next few days.

We have such a problem with birds around here.
Our front porch was covered with, well, you know!

We did hang up some wind chimes in hope of that working.

But really, does anyone else out there in blogging world
deal with this?

Any advice you could give would be GREATLY appreciated!

Enjoy your day!

  1. Is there something you could put up there where they build their nests to prevent them from rebuilding them? I have heard that a rubber snake placed beside their nest will scare them off. i hope you get great tips!

  2. Hi Sweetie! Glad your weekend was good and that "you" got a lot accomplished!! ;o) WTG Colonel!!

Sue had the birds nesting on her porch so she may know something about that.

Hope you have a great week, and that you are still healing up well!
    Love ya,

  3. Would love to see photos of your home all ready for Autumn. I had tears in my eyes about Irena that she did not win the prize for her heroic efforts. We were in Wawsaw last year and is a depressing city. They are building up the old town mainly for tourists but the rest of the city is gray in color when the communists came in. We then went to the concentration camps in Poland which were so moving. Did you know that in Poland every child has to take a tour of the camps with their school before they graduate high school to keep this in their minds so that this part of history is never repeated.

  4. Just so you know, there are no nests! Just birds hanging out. Our neighbors planted pine trees about 3 years ago. We never had a problem before these trees were put in. The birds go from the trees to our roof to our porch. Awful.

  7. Hi Sunshine,
Bet your porch looks pretty, nothing like a fresh coat of paint to make things look all new again.
    Love paint!!
Looking forward to seeing those pics! Can we ladies ever get enough of decorating and seeing each others houses. It's just such fun!!
Yea, birds can be a real pain sometimes, they like to blast our
cars a lot! Especially right after
you wash it! I think they sit up there and laugh as you are washing it, and say to their friends just wait till she goes inside, I have a nice surprise for her!! lol
Glad you had such a nice weekend,
know it is fun having hubby home!
    Have missed you lately.
How are you feeling?? Is everything all cleared up?? Sure hope so!
    Blessings hon,
    Nellie

  8. We have a milkcan painted black, too, but then had a folk artist paint it up with tole flowers...

We made the birds stop sitting in one area by putting out a feeder on the OTHER side of the house -- so now they hang out there and don't poop by the patio...

  11. I used to have a real problem with bird droppings all over my porch handrails. After a few days of observing the birds I realized the reason they were always on my handrail was because of all the moths that had collected on the siding near the porch lights. They would swoop right up to the house from the railing and grab the moths leaving poop on the railing and moth blood spatters all over the siding. We remedied it two ways, no porch railings in this house only columns, and during bug season we use the lamp post instead of the lights near the front door which keeps the moths and birds away from my porch. Worked like a charm! If you don't have a lamp post you can try the yellow bug bulbs that don't gather moths. Hope I've helped Hugs, Loretta

  12. I LOVE projects and fresh paint, and I'm looking forward to seeing your pics of everything...I am going back to your blog so I can maybe figure out where you live so that you even have the bird problem. It's not that we don't have birds of course, but never enough to have this kind of problem. I would LOVE a big front porch with lots of birds to see though, but I guess I never thought about the "problem" it would produce. Good luck with that. I think I heard that thing about the owl too. Blessings, Debbie

  14. I can't wait to see the pics! I bet it looks so nice! My parents had the problem with the nests, so they used fake rubber snakes and rats up in the corner, they didn't warn me years ago and when I looked up, I jumped, there was this big 'ole snake, at 1st glance I didn't realize it was rubber toy! lol!

  21. Birds! I love them, but I don't like their droppings on my porch swing, and quilts, etc! We have no exposed rafters on our new porch, so no problemo there. However, the old porch has exposed rafters, making a lovely roost for them. No advice, except if possible, cover up any 'roosts' they might have access to. Or if they're not an overhead problem but just coming in to hang out on your furniture etc, you might buy one of those scary owls from a garden center to shoo them off? Not real pretty, but better than bird doo =)

Wow, you had a busy several days at your house. We SO need that here! Just need the time off! -Tammy

  22. We have been putting up new siding at our house, and I can honestly say WE..I can't believe it actually. It has been quite fun (at times,,LOL).

I DON'T like getting up on the ladder though to the roof..That freaked me out and I prayed the whole time..Will take pictures once it is completed with the new shutters..I'm getting my shutters,,I'm SO excited!
