Where Have I Been?

I've been...

HERE!

Just quite busy.
Sorry!

Actually my back has been killing me for the past few days...
really slowing me down.
But it's starting to feel better.

We went to the lake yesterday and let me tell you it was HOT.
But don't worry, I sat under the canopy or my own umbrella...
not a beach umbrella, my own rain umbrella.

Yes, I have turned into "THAT" woman.
The one who uses a rain umbrella while sitting on the beach.
My kids make fun of me.
But the beach umbrella doesn't do it.
And guess what happened while I was standing in the lake, while holding my umbrella of course???  I took my cell phone out to see what time it was...
AND...
Proceeded to drop my cell phone in the lake.
I am lost without it!
But a friend of mine told me to put it in a bag of uncooked rice and leave it alone for a few days.  Hopefully this will work.

Last night was interesting here at Walking on Sunshine.
We're sleeping and around 1:00 ALL THE SMOKE ALARMS IN THE HOUSE GO OFF.
Yes, I said ALL.
This has happened before so I knew there was no fire, but for just a minute, I went a bit crazy.
I think it has something to do if one of the batteries is low.

BUT it's no fun trying to drag a chair over to a smoke alarm at 1:00 in the morning,
half asleep,
and pull the battery out only to remember
they're also hooked up to the electrical system in the house.

So I had to really disconnect one of them.
So back to sleep, right?  NO.
At 2:30 AM, they go off AGAIN.
So I unplugged one downstairs and SILENCE!

Why do these things always happen when the Colonel is away?

Enjoy your day!

  1. Lois,
The bag of rice should work. I had a similar situation with the blackberry I use for work and after two days, it was working. If possible, remove the battery.

    Enjoy your day!

  2. Hey Lois, just a thought.. we've had that alarms do that in th emiddle of summer here and we figured that it might have been the humidity. Is it really hot and humid where you are? I know if too much hot steam from the bathroom escapes all at once, our alarm will go off for a minute or two. And we had it happen a couple of times last summer when it ws really hot and sticky out, and I think it was just the humidity. I can't say for sure, but it might be your culprit.

And I get you about being "that lady". I remember as kid thinking, "WHY would you EVER come to th ebeach and not lay on the sand in the sun and swim? And now, I'm happy to sit and then just put my feet in if it's not hot enough or if it just doesn't take my fancy, to swim. Hope you ha dfune, though, minus the cell phone emergency. :)

And don't forget to pop over to my blog and enter the give-away if you like aprons, these are some cute ones!

  3. I sure hope you can catch a nap today.......goodness. That happened last week with our Carbon Monoxide detector......went off in the middle of the night....hubby was at least here or I'd have opened all the windows only to find out it was a battery needed! :0

  5. I applaud you for taking good care of your body (and skin!) during the heat. I have friends who still bake in the tanning bed (sigh). Oh, but I digress :)

We've had inexplicable smoke alarm fits in past. I always had trouble going back to sleep because I wondered if it could be an electrical fire or something we couldn't see. Hope you get the alarm problem fixed soon! -Tammy

  6. Our alarms go off sometimes in the summer because of the heat in the attic. Hubby needs to put in an exhaust fan to take that heat out.
Glad you had a good vacation in spite of the phone issue. I hope you get it working soon. I know what it is like to be without it for a while.
    Have an enjoyable week.
    Hugs,
    AMY

  7. OH, isn't that the way it goes? Nothing out of the ordinary happens when your husband is home, but let him go away and it never fails! So sorry about the smoke alarms!

    I've been really busy too!

  8. I dropped my phone in the pool and sadly the bag of rice did not work. I hope you have better luck.

Good job to take time for yourself. I hope the alarm situation gets resolved. My toilets are not working well and my husband doesn't get home until Labor day... It is always something.

  11. Nothing EVER happens when my DH is home ... when our smoke alarms went off in mid-night I called the fire dept., better them on a chair than me ... a BUG had gotten into them.

Yup! Umbrella goes everywhere with me, too. You take care of yourself.

  12. I hate it when that stuff happens and my man isn't home!! It does help me to appreciate him even more when he is here to handle junk like that and calm me down!

    Been missing your "Sunshine"!
And know that I am praying for your back, sweet friend.

    Love and hugs,
    Becky

  15. I accidentally washed my son's cellphone and it came through the horrible experience okay...but the screen was never as bright or nice again...had to finally get a new one, hope yours fares better.

Gosh, I would be so freaked out by the smoke alarms going off AGAIN...scary...

Glad to hear you have an umbrella at the lake - your skin looks so fair that you will be glad you shielded it when you are older, dearie.

  16. Sorry about your phone. My DH spilled a cup of water on his but he was never able to use it again. I hope you have better luck with yours. I hate my fire alarms. I've had the same thing happen to me in the middle of the night. I just about jumped out of my skin! It turns out that a spider had made a web in one of them and somehow set it off. If dust gets in them it will happen too. We have the kind that are hard wired into the electrical system and those things give off a piercing sound that can make you deaf for a few minutes afterward. It's not a continuous sound just a few screeches and then it stops for a couple of minutes. Wanna hear something scary? My son slept through it!!! Have a great day! Hugs

  17. Girl... I've missed you. Sorry to hear that your back is bothering you.
Man, nothin like being woken from a good nights sleep to the shrill sound of a fire or smoke alarm.
Take care of yourself and pamper that back.
    Have a blessed one. HUGS.

  19. Hi Lois,
Sounds like you day yesterday was like my day today. When my husband used to travel when the children were little, all sorts of crazy things would happen while he was gone, and used to think what is up with this!! Why does he
miss all the fun!! I think it is Murphys law and the enemy of our soul all rolled into one!! ha
Will pray your back get better,
I know what that is like I have that problem at times too. Lovely!!
Thanks for your good wishes for getting all our financial stuff straightened out. I am just praying his check makes it to the acct., but I think it will!! Time will tell,
Thurs. will be here before we know it.
Well, have a good evening hon
and a good tomorrow. I am going to
bed early I just cut my foot on the washer. Hubby had the outside casing off so I was trying to clean it and ran right into the corner of it with my foot! Think
I will be safer in bed!! ha
    Take care hon,
    Blessings, Nellie

  21. Lo-is! I'm sorry your back was giving you fits. I hope it continues to feel better. Oh, no about the phone! Are we related? lol, sounds like something I'd do! My son dropped his in a glass of water (uh-huh...I think it was the toilet) but anyway, he removed the battery and put it in a bag of uncooked rice and that did the trick! Hope yours will be working soon. I think that day filled your quota for the year of "oh no!" days! Take care!

  22. WOW LOIS, INTERESTING POST TO SAY THE LEAST! HOPE YOUR PHONE STARTS WORKING AGAIN... IF ANYTHING IS GOING TO GO WRONG, IT'S ALWAYS WHEN SCOT IS AT WORK! ODD ISN'T IT?!

AS FOR YOUR COMMENT ON MY POST.
I DIDN'T GO TO KINDERGARTEN BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T HAVE IT THEN AT OUR SCHOOL. THEY HAD HEADSTART, BUT IT WAS OPTIONAL, SO MY MOTHER WAS AT HOME WITH ME AND DIDN'T SEND ME. BUT, FIRST GRADE AT THAT TIME TAUGHT THE SAME THINGS OUR KINDERGARTENS DO NOW.

AND YES...I WOULD DO ALL MY CHORES IN THE HOUSE AND COOK, ETC. WHILE NOELLE SLEPT SO I COULD PLAY WITH HER WHEN SHE WOULD WAKE UP. I WOULD SIT DOWN AT SUPPER AND REALIZE THAT I HADN'T HAD ANY FOOD ALL DAY LONG! DON'T HAVE THAT PROBLEM ANY MORE!!! LOL.

    HAPPY DAY LOIS,
    LIESA

  23. Hi Lois,
It is unusually hot and humid here too, but thankfully next week's temps will fall back down into the 70's. Yay! A week late but so welcomed! It usually happens around the 3rd week of August but like everything else this year weatherwise it's running a little late. Then we get what we call "Indian Summer" around here, which means that temps will jump back into the upper 80's and 90's for just a short period sometime in late Sept or early Oct. and out come the shorts and t-shirts again and the bees start going crazy!!!!!!! I just love the fall and can't wait to go pumpkin pickin'. Have a great day. Hugs, Loretta ps Isn't it wonderful news about Amy this morning? Praise God!!

  24. Ouch Lois! You sound like you are having a tough time at the moment! My tip for phone was to leave them on the radiator, for 48 hours without trying to turn it on. It got me out of a hole once! Hope it is all sorted now for you. Fiona x

  28. I am also the one under the umbrella and this year at the beach we bought one of those tents so that we can all fit. I call it my traveling circus family:) My husband also travels and I can't reach the alarms in my home so I call the fire department and they come and help me change the batteries and check out the system. Have to love those guys and they do not mind at all coming and helping out as they would rather change your batteries then come with hoses to a fire in your home. I hope your back is feeling better. Come & visit my blog this Friday as I have a fun post about the blog girls in my area and how we took a cooking class. So much fun.

  30. Under an umbrella, wearing a skirted bathing suit is how you will find me. That's a lot nicer than the fools our age who dress like they are 18, and bake their skin.

I keep meaning to tell you that my daughter, BG, will be talking a horticulture class at school, and promised to start working on seeds for a money tree. Don't I wish...

  31. Oh, I hate the smoke detectors! They make me crazy. They never go out on Saturday morning when you home awake, and just cleaning the house..... NOOOOOOO! Always in the middle of the night you are the most tired, or alone.

Let us know if the cell phone dries out....

  32. I hope your cell phone gets better! Isn't it weird how we become like our mothers! I don't like to swim very much any more either! I wear lots of sunscreen and sit by the pool and read! I hate it when it's time to change all the fire alarm batteries! You poor thing!

    Hugs, Sharon
